Preventative & general

Preventative and general dentistry

At Avalon Dental Kalamunda, our focus is on preventing problems rather than waiting for them to occur. With regular routine check-ups we can intercept issues early, with minimal expense and discomfort to you. We recommend a check-up and professional clean every six months so small problems are caught before they become big ones.

What this includes

  • Fissure sealants for cavity prevention and strengthening of teeth.
  • Mouthguards to prevent sporting injuries.
  • Occlusal splints to protect teeth and jaws against the damage and wear caused by grinding and clenching.
  • Early diagnosis and management of periodontal (gum) disease, with custom-made Periopack home care kits, regular 3, 6 and 12 monthly recall visits, and referral to a nearby periodontal specialist for more complicated cases.
  • Orthodontic care. We work closely with a nearby specialist orthodontist for patients of all ages who need Invisalign or conventional braces.

We also take digital dental x-rays when there is a clear reason to, using a system that requires very small radiation doses. We never take them unnecessarily.

Restorative & CAD/CAM

Restorative dentistry and same-day ceramics

At Avalon Dental Kalamunda we follow minimal intervention dentistry to restore your teeth conservatively. Removing as little as possible, using modern techniques, reduces the need to progress to more complicated and costly work later, keeps discomfort down, and keeps your teeth looking good.

Our in-house chair-side milling unit allows for a quick turnaround, often replacing a worn or ageing medium-sized restoration the same day with a stronger, more natural-looking ceramic. That can remove the need to jump straight to a full crown. Our 3D imaging camera also removes the need for taking impressions in many cases.

If you have an old, large or leaking filling, talk to us about whether a ceramic restoration is the better long-term option.

Cosmetic

Cosmetic dentistry

Many of us want our teeth to be comfortable and working well, and to look good too. Our cosmetic options include:

  • Home whitening kits using affordable, Australian Dental Association-approved bleaching gels.
  • Composite resin bonding and direct laminate veneers, where only minimal work is needed to get an excellent result.
  • Porcelain ceramic veneers for more involved cases where a higher aesthetic result is a must.

After a consultation we can talk through which option suits your teeth, your goals and your budget.

Crowns, bridges & implants

Crowns, bridges and dental implants

Some situations, extensive decay, trauma, very large fillings, previous root canal treatment, wear and tear, or missing teeth, call for more involved restorative work. We offer:

  • Crowns that completely cover a tooth, spreading the load evenly, reducing the chance of fracture and increasing the tooth's life span while improving how it looks. Material options include all-ceramic, porcelain fused to metal, and gold, depending on your needs.
  • Bridges, which are one or more crowns joined together to replace missing teeth. They are an effective option where implants are not suitable.
  • Dental implants, titanium tooth roots placed in the jaw to replace missing teeth. They can support a single crown, a bridge for several teeth, or stabilise a removable denture. Implants are generally very successful and long lasting. We work closely with specialists to make sure the treatment goes well.

Dentures

Dentures

Where bridges and implants are not an option, dentures are a cost-effective way to replace several teeth, and they can still be very functional and natural looking. Options include:

  • Conventional full dentures, upper or lower, for people with no remaining teeth.
  • Partial dentures for one or more missing teeth, made with an acrylic (plastic) or metal (chrome) base depending on your needs.
  • Immediate dentures, fitted when teeth must be removed but you do not want to be without teeth while you heal.

We work with a close, experienced local laboratory technician for a quick turnaround and as little inconvenience to you as possible.

Root canal

Root canal treatment

Some of us will experience an aching or infected tooth at some point, caused by decay, disease, a failed restoration or injury. Root canal (endodontic) treatment often lets us save a tooth that would otherwise have to come out, and combined with a crown it can significantly increase the tooth's life span.

At Avalon, we use rotary endodontic instruments for easier, faster and more effective treatment, and we work closely with specialist endodontists on more complex cases.

Extractions & wisdom teeth

Extractions and wisdom teeth

Sometimes a tooth is too broken down or infected to save. At Avalon, extractions are part of our everyday work and are usually done with minimal time, expense and discomfort.

For anxious patients we can carry out extractions with "happy gas" or, in certain cases, prescription medication to ease anxiety during the procedure. For more complicated removals we work closely with a specialist for prompt treatment under intravenous sedation or general anaesthetic.

If a wisdom tooth is giving you trouble, come in and we will assess it.
